Painting vines red at Provence
2005-11-17
THE Grande Provence Estate, Franschhoek, makers of Angels Tears and Grande Provence wines, has won the inaugural category of ‘Super Quaffer of the Year’ in the new Platter Guide 2006 for its Angels Tears Red.
Hundreds of ‘super quaffing’ wines, at a similar price point of R30, were sampled from across the country and these were narrowed down to a mere 10 finalists.
The tasting panel, consisting of 13 leading experts appointed by The John Platter Guide, judged the wines in a ‘blind-tasting’ procedure and the Angels Tears Red was the clear winner.
Celebrated winemaker Jaco Marais who was recently awarded The General Smuts Trophy at the 2005 South African National Young Wine Show, said, “It has been a great year full of surprises for one and all and this is a great prelude to the launch of our first vintage on the estate. We are very proud to be recognised in the ‘wine bible’ of South Africa.”
Angels Tears is reasonably priced, very good value and a clear winner in the best of the best - as a non-vintage easy drinking red wine and in their words ‘exceptionally drinkable!’
The Angels Tears Red is a medium bodied blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with layers of succulent plums, berries and vanilla.
Angels Tears Red is an unpretentious wine that is rich in colour with bright fruity flavours. It is an easy drinking companion to most well-prepared dishes or simply on its own.
Since the completion of its refurbishment this year, Grande Provence now also offers a restaurant and art gallery.
