Great season for Paarl Cricket Club

Great season for Paarl Cricket Club

2005-03-24

ALTHOUGH the Novel Paarl team had mixed fortunes over the last weekend, the team outperformed all other teams in the Boland Super League, to take home two of the three trophies on offer.

Paarl was unbeaten in the first round to scoop that silverware, and will also be crowned as the overall league champions to represent Boland at the National Club Championships in September.

Paarl II also clinched the first round trophy, and will retain their title as overall champions in the second league, after two excellent victories over the weekend.

Paarl III finished as runners-up in the third Division.
The Novel Paarl team went down by 55 runs against Hermanus at the Parys Grounds on Saturday in a Top Eight match which had no bearing in the competition, as Paarl East and Young People’s were fighting it out for the title at the same time.

Hermanus posted 255 thanks to Stephen Forde (41), Wickus Horne (52), Wallace Albertyn (47*) and Gerry Ferreira (62*), while Anwell Newman took 2/72.

For the home team, their find of the season, Lee-Roy Walters (74), continued his excellent run of form, hitting 10 boundaries in 94 balls.
Wesley Euley (39) was the only other batsman to catch the eye as Paarl struggled to 200 in 54 overs.

On Saturday, the Novel Paarl team, considerably weakened through the unavailability of key players, scored one of their best victories of the season, beating Worcester United by 33 runs in Worcester.

Walters (75) hit nine boundaries to take Paarl to 202/8, ably assisted by Newman (31*) and Lynal Jansen (21*).

Walters’ 79 run fourth wicket partnership with Jansen was the highlight, until aforementioned retired hurt.

Nolan Loff took 4/44.

Fine bowling by Newman (3/37) and Faghrie Jacobs (3/37) caused the home team to collapse for 169 in the 58th over.

Paarl II bowled out Bergrivier for 165 at the Parys Grounds on Saturday, with Richard Cunningham (4/56) and Morgan Adams (3/38) being the main destroyers.

Ralph Morris (35) and Paul Liebenberg (32) tried valiantly for the visitors. The home team required only 36 overs to hit the winning runs, with captain Marco Walters (42), Graham Adams (40), Wade October (34*) and Alfredo Adams (26) showing good form with the bat.

On Saturday against Easterns, it was Denver van Reenen (3/44), Morgan Adams (2/21) and Alfredo Adams (2/26) who did the damage, to restrict the home team to 123. Kevin Arendse (37*) was the only batsman to show some application.

Paarl II (125/3) knocked off the runs in the 33rd over, thanks to Marco Walters (73 in 107 balls), whose second wicket partnership of 94 runs with Wade October clinched the victory for their team.

The Paarl Over 35’s avenged the defeat suffered against their Young People’s counterparts in February, taking home the Friendship Trophy after a nail-biting finish at Dal Josaphat on Sunday.

The hosts scored 205/8 in 45 overs with Salieg Nackerdien (75) being the main stalwart. Paarl got off to a great start with a 100 partnership by opening batsmen Elmar Baker (40) and Alan Alexander (60). The wheels then came off and, when Desmond Marthinussen (31) departed in the 42nd over with the score at 192/6, it was left to captain Stephen Arendse and Angelo Carolissen to carry the can.

Carolissen struck the winning runs off the last ball of the match, with a boundary to mid on.

The Novel Paarl team will play in the 45 over semi-final against Victorians on Sunday 3 April.
