Free rabies vaccination

2005-11-24

CLINICS providing free vaccination of dogs and cats against the killer disease Rabies, started on Monday at the Mbekweni Sportsgrounds.
Today clinics will be held at the Groenheuwel Clinic (from 10:00 to 13:00), and at Nederburg Primary from 14:00 to 18:00.

Tomorrow a clinic will be held at Amstelhof Primary from 12:00 to 17:00. More clinics will soon be held in Wellington.

Rabies is a virus that is transmitted in saliva, by bites from dogs and cats and some wild animals to people and other animals. Unless medical attention is sought and given immediately after an infected bite, it is fatal.

It affects the nervous system, so the most common signs are behavioural changes such as drooling, thirst and aggression. People affected often exhibit a fear of water. Cattle can also be affected by rabies.

Vaccination is very effective at preventing rabies and all dogs must be vaccinated every three years by law.

Aggressive, domestic animals should be avoided. Keep away from wild animals, especially those that appear tame.

If you get bitten, the wound should be cleaned thoroughly. Prompt treatment and injections will save your life, so contact your local health service immediately. Report the animal to the health and state veterinary departments.
