2005-11-24

THE Drakenstein HIV/Aids Forum has organised an aids awareness campaign to be held from tomorrow until next Thursday (Aids Day).
Tomorrow at 18:00 the programme starts with a freestyle dance competition at the Allandale Bowling Hall, organised by Ester Lottering (877-5750).

Sunday there will be a service in the St Augustine’s Catholic Church in Paarl and on Monday between 09:00 and 13:00 there is a march from Carterville to the Wellington Town Hall.

The march is organised by Helping Hands, Cabsa and Woman on the Move (contact Priscilla Simons 073-428-7706).

Tuesday there is another march from Max Garage in Mbekweni to the Mbekweni Stadium, also from 09:00 to 13:00.

There will be drum majorettes, choirs, traditional healers and the Born Again choir.

On Wednesday at 08:00 members of the forum will distribute pamphlets at the Huguenot Tunnel and that evening they will visit sex workers in the Paarl CBD.

The main programme on Thursday 1 December will be at Allandale Correctional Services, starting a march at 08:30 from the Shoprite parking area to Allandale.

There will be a brass band, drum majorettes, athletes, members of Correctional Services and the community.

The formal programme will take place in the new Allandale recreational hall, with the lighting of candles at 10:00.

There are several speakers on the programme, alternated by choirs and drama groups.

The morning’s programme will be concluded with the formation of a human chain just after 11:00.

From 12:30 to 16:00 there will be a cultural and social programme with a mini-expo, plots for sale and big prizes to be won.

That evening there will be a communal service at the switching on of the Christmas lights in Lady Grey Street.

* Expo: Limited stalls are still available for 1 December at R50 per stall. Contact Isaac Arumagam (083-584-2934) or Louis Reinke (084-506-7897).
