Teen with golden thumb

PAARL’S own mobile phone game star, Tamaryn Brooke-Smith (13), was one of the stars of the World Cyber Games held in Singapore over the past week.

Tamaryn, the only school-going and female member of the SA team, devastated the international opposition with her golden “phone” thumb, to win her section, Chopper Rescue.

Not only did Tamaryn win gold, but she also won $2000 (R12 000) in prize money.

An exhausted, but jubilant South African team returned to South Africa on Monday.

She managed to focus on the competition, despite the fact that her family home caught alight the night before her departure last week. The family lost nearly all their belongings.

“My parents asked me to keep my focus, and I managed to do that,” says Tamaryn, who managed to salve her packed suitcase from the blaze.

As gold medal winner, Tamaryn automatically qualifies for the next international tournament taking place in Monza, Italy, next year.

She is adamant however that, for now, she’s had enough of the cyber game “Chopper Rescue”.

Even though this is the first time ever that South Africa has ever sent a national representative team to the World Cyber Games Mobile Tournament, the support and sponsorship of Exactmobile and First National Bank ensured that it would be plain sailing.

Started as the World Cyber Challenge in 2000, the World Cyber Games was first officially held in 2001 and 2005 and marks its fifth year.

It has grown to be the world’s largest computer and video games festival, having more than 800 gamers from over 70 countries for the 2005 Grand Final in Singapore, November 16 - 20.

The South African players were chosen to participate in four official games for the competition: Bruce Lee, Goolie, Mid Town Madness, and Chopper Rescue.
