A GROUP of local golf players had the privilege to share the greens with one of South Africa’s top golf players this week.
Trevor Immelman played a round of golf with 24 members of the Pearl Valley Golf Club on Monday.
The 25-year-old Immelman was in a very relaxed mood as he took turns in playing three holes with each of the six four ball teams. “The greens are some of the best that I have putted on this year, but apart from that the course itself is immaculate.
“I know it hasn’t been rated by any of the golfing magazines yet, but it must be amongst the top five golf courses in the country,” said Immelman whose home course for the next year is Pearl Valley.
Asked about his game on the day where the temperature soared to 33°C with a strong south-easterly pumping hard, Immelman said: “I haven’t played too bad today, actually. I’m kind of winding down now, and with just the SA Open still left for the year I’m starting to focus on next year.”
“I’m focusing on playing in the US PGA Tour next year and only play a couple of tournaments in Europe. This year I’ve travelled between America and Europe eight times and also played a tournament in China and Australia - even though I’m only 25, it takes a lot out of you,” said the boytjie from Gordon's Bay, who currently plays on the European PGA Tour.
“And the US PGA is were all the big names play and it’s were you want to be seen,” says Immelman who with his wife Carminita have a home in Orlando, Florida along with a place in Richmond, England.
“But it’s lekker to be back. I’ve been to a couple of countries that are seen as holiday destinations, like Spain, but they can’t compare to South Africa,” he says, relishing the fact that he can spend Christmas in his home country with his parents.
“And things seem to be getting better here. The people seem to be happier,” he says thoughtfully. “If we could only sort out the crime,” he adds stating that that is one factor he gets questioned about continuously while abroad.
“But I keep telling them that it’s not that bad.”
Trevor went on to play a good round of golf and finished with a clinic at the local driving range.
He also held a clinic for a group of players from the South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB) at the Nelson Mandela Invitational this weekend and was very impressed with the level of talent.
“These are the best swing on kids this age I’ve seen for a long time,” he said.
The children aged between eight and 15 have been receiving coaching from the SAGDB as part of its development programme in the Helderberg region.
