Paarl's singing angel
2005-12-08
THE girl with the golden voice and the infectious laugh. Paarl’s singing angel... this is how fans describe gospel singer Wilma Brooks.
Wilma was born in Paardeberg. At the age of three her mother died and Wilma grew up in Stellenbosch and attended Cloetesville Primary and Secondary Schools.
Her father remarried and they moved back to Paarl where she finished her school career at New Orleans Secondary.
She was introduced to music by her father who himself is a well-known performing artist.
It was at the tender age of eight that Wilma first sung at a real concert.
Her early development was marked by a lot of rebellion, as she was trying to find herself.
“I ran away from God, but seven years ago I stopped running and surrendered myself to God,” she remembers.
Her twin brothers became her mentors in her new life. Her one brother, Kobus is the senior pastor at Charis Worship Centre and John is a training pastor at Valley Christian Fellowship.
Both are performing artists and composers. John composed two of her songs on her CD, “Moment of the heart”, which includes the title song and Kobus is a guest artist on the album.
Wilma released her debut album, “Lord, You are my shining star” in 2002/3, with “Moments of the heart” in September 2004.
It was well received and is still being bought by fans all over the country.
Her song, “Here I Am” written by John, became a favourite among fans.
Wilma is also a music and manuscript writer. She composed 60 percent of the songs on her album.
She entertains her fans at her showcases by leading them in worship. From time to time she leads the praise and worship at the church which she attends.
She also does praise and worship workshops at different events and churches.
Wilma is the hostess of the Radio KC Gospel Top 20 programme on Sundays from 11:00 to 13:00.
In her programme she has interviewed various musicians, such as Alban Pietersen and Simon Seekoei.
Wilma says: “God is leading the top 20 in His way. He laid the foundation and he deserves the honour, not me.”
She is currently busy with the final production of her new album, “The Blood”.
