Pay up to win big prizes
2005-12-08
NOBODY should miss the opportunity to be at the Paarl Town Hall on Wednesday at 18:00.
That will be the place to be when the Drakenstein Municipality will be rewarding people of the community who have diligently settled their municipal household accounts.
However, even those people who, for some or other reason have fallen behind in payments, but who have lately started paying their accounts, may receive a cash blessing.
Council has already approved the “Drakenstein Lotto” as some people are calling it.
This is part of the incentive that Council has launched where approximately R52 million municipal debt is to be written off.
According to Mayor Herman Bailey, members of the community should not see the whole exercise as “money from home”, but rather view it as a means to encourage people to start paying their outstanding municipal arrears.
During a meeting with senior municipal officials and representatives of Deloitte, a professional service provider firm, was appointed as observers to ensure a fair and transparent process.
Bailey said he hoped ratepayers would seize the opportunity to bring their accounts up to date.
For the next draw - in about three months’ time - only those people who have at least paid their municipal household accounts for December 2005, as well as January and February 2006, will be eligible for participation in the draw.
In the prize draw two categories will be applicable.
The first category will contain all the names of people who are still in arrears with the payment of their accounts, but who have started paying every month’s account.
Altogether 15 people will win prizes in this category. They will range from 15 consumers who will each win an electricity coupon to the value of R100 to four prizes of R500, R1 000, R1 500 and R2 500.
However, big money can be won in the second category. This will be for consumers who are not even one cent in arrears and who have settled their accounts every month. Five prizes will be allocated according to the computer draw: cash of R4 000, R8 000, R13 000 and R25 000 and a first prize of a new car to the value of R100 000. Furthermore, during the programme in the town hall on 14 December, there will be a lucky draw for all spectators, excluding town councillors and officials. These prizes will not cost the ratepayers anything as they will be in the form of donations from the business community.
