Dog beaten to death
2005-12-14
“THIS was the most cruel incident that I have ever seen in my 30 years as veterinarian.”
These were the words of local vet Reinhold Lawrenz, after he was forced to euthanase a dog that was beaten to a pulp with a rake.
The incident occurred last week in Klapmuts when David Paul’s family dog apparently wandered into the neighbour’s yard where two Pit Bull Terrier bitches are kept.
David’s children then witnessed the neighbour, Matthew Toise, beating the dog within inches of its life. When David was summoned by his children, he found Toise washing the blood off the steel rake.
The dog, a short-haired cross, was rushed to Lawrenz who was shocked at what he saw.
“His jaw was crushed and his skull broken. Due to its injuries it had started to convulse,” said a saddened Lawrenz. He was forced to put the animal out of its misery.
David often brought his dog for innoculations and tick treatment. “They looked after their dog well.”
Toise was arrested and appeared in court on charges of intentional damage to property.
