Unique house handed over

THE MEC for Local Government and Housing, Richard Dyantyi. handed over a house to beneficiary Mzikazi Florence Gxowa, in Mbekweni’s stalled Project 2 on Friday.
Gxowa, single, disabled and mother of six, tearfully said that she was extremely happy to finally get a house after waiting for almost nine years.
The national Department of Housing allocated one house to the Western Cape Province to build and complete within the period of activism.
It is uniquely built with recycled material including cement, natural stones and a few bricks.
Referring to the stones and sticks Dyantyi commented: “These materials were used as weapons during the eighties and the struggle years, but we must now use these same weapons to build houses. “A lot of money was saved that otherwise would have been spent to buy bricks and other building materials. It can now be used elsewhere and more houses can be built”.
Community members and departmental staff, with the guidance of a qualified architect, were involved in the construction of the house.
The Mbekweni People Housing Process project in Paarl where this house has been built, has just been unblocked and construction of the first 10 of 40 showhouses has started.
“Awarding the house to a disabled woman, forms part of the ongoing campaign to ease the suffering of women and children. It also strives to restore their dignity and to ensure safer and secure families and communities,” Dyantyi said.
