Cobras' throat cut
2005-12-21
Sunday was a sad day for Western Cape cricket enthusiasts, when local heroes, the Cape Cobras, came to a spectacular fall at the hands of the Eastern Cape Warriors at Boland Park in Paarl.
Not only does this mean that the Cobras have no chance of reaching the semi-finals, but they stand a good chance of receiving the dreaded wooden spoon at the end of the tournament.
On Friday evening they were forced to settle for a draw against the Dolphins, after the match was consistently disrupted by heavy rainfalls.
Sunday's match was the sixth defeat from seven matches suffered by the Cobras and next season they will have to seriously rethink their strategies.
The Cobras failed dismally in both the batting and bowling departments, and what should have been a good chance for them to win a match turned into a nightmare.
Wickets started falling at an early stage and at the fall of the fourth wicket, the Cobras were forced to introduce substitute Gerhardus Strydom.
This left-handed local boy was the only batsman who could keep his head high, after pounding 63 runs off just 73 balls.
At the end of the Cobras' innings, the Warriors needed a mere 172 runs from the alotted 45 overs, meaning less than four runs an over. To add insult to injury, the Cobras star bowler Con de Lange was forced to leave the field after dislocating his shoulder when fielding a ball off his own bowling.
At the end of play, the visitors had four wickets and seven balls in hand.
Needless to say, the local cricket lovers dragged their feet uncomfortably home.
