Why are trees dying?
2005-12-21
SOME time back I wrote to your newspaper regarding the oak tree that had died at the site of the Provincial Road camp in Suider-Paarl. My reason for writing was that I had witnessed very poor ecological practices in handling both Bitumin and, what I believe, were spraying chemicals that were washed and allowed to drain past these, into the stormwater drain.
The official, from the Province, denied my allegation. I now notice that four trees, next to each other, have died - while the 20 odd others, are fine.
I think that this matter must be seriously investigated as it is obvious that the Road Department is poisoning the soil and possibly the ground water.
