DESPITE tough conditions Wellington rubber ducker Steyn Basson and pilot Helgo Hohenstein achieved a top three position during the recent Trans-Agulhas race.
Basson and Hohenstein finished third in the P750 modifieds class in a time of 12 hours 33 minutes and 25 seconds.
The race, billed as the toughest inflatable boat race in the world, saw 50 boats line up at the start along the Plettenberg Bay coast line.
What followed was a gruelling five day ordeal with 18 boats and their crews succumbing to the rigours of the event.
Organisers believed that racers had to face the toughest conditions of the last seven years, with both man and machine having to battle strong winds and big swells.
Basson and his team mate, who made up Team Mojo Beverages/Silversteel Engineering, managed to reach the finish at Strand on 1 January in good time even though their gearbox gave out just before Struisbaai.
“We owe our success to hard work, the best equipment and the support of our sponsors, without whom we could not compete,” said Steyn.
The race was won by Bertie van Huyssteen and Marius Lodewyk (PH Planthire) in record time, followed by Lionel Ball and Stevan Hugo of H&H Transport.
