Boland girls sedate Free State

2006-01-12

THE Boland women’s cricket team started the second half of their season with an emphatic seven wicket win over Free State on Saturday.

The home captain, Sunette Loubser, won the toss and had no hesitation sending the visitors in to bat on a very overcast day.

Free State’s openers weathered the storm and posted a quick 65 for the first wicket on the pitch of Boland Park Stadium in Paarl.

Once the first wicket fell, however, the others came tumbling after and Free State was bowled out for a mere 123 runs.

Loubser led from the front and ended with figures of 4/9 after 10 overs.
She was ably assisted by Alecia Smith (3/35) and Audrey Petersen (2/29).
The Boland run chase got off to an indifferent start when the first wicket fell with only six runs on the board.

A 51 run second-wicket partnership between Loubser and Helmien Rambaldo, and an unbeaten 59 run fourth-wicket partnership between Loubser (54*) and Smith (35*), steadied the chase.

Boland reached the target comfortably in the 26th over, earning a bonus point for their efforts.

Loubser was adjudged player of the match for an excellent all-round performance.

Boland has now played seven matches, winning six and only losing one.

They are currently in first position in the Coastal group with five matches remaining.

They play their next match against South Western Districts at Boland Park on Saturday. The game starts at 10:00.
