Crime stats down as police get tough
2006-01-12
THE festive season proved to be a success for the local police who enforced a “no tolerance” stance against crime.
Traditionally, Christmas is a time when crime margins are high, due to criminals taking advantage of holiday-makers' empty properties and the high intake of alcohol.
Paarl station commisioner, Snr/Supt Nelson Govender, said that they were happy as statistics indicated there had been a markable drop in many crimes.
“Especially in the CBD area of Paarl it was quiet and one of the reasons for this is the dedicated contribution of the Crime Watch volunteers, as well as the support from the community.
“Visible policing was also enforced throughout the season, with many more police officers on the streets,” Supt Govender said.
Nine arrests were made for drunken driving, 40 for shop-lifting, eight for rape, 24 for burglaries and five for theft of vehicles.
There was not a single report of vehicles being broken into. The only worrying factor was the increase in serious assaults, with 48 arrests being made.
According to the police, this is directly linked to alcohol abuse.
