Caregivers for released prisoners
2006-01-12
THE Masakhane Youth Centre recently trained thirteen volunteers as home-based caregivers to care for terminally ill HIV/Aids patients.
The five day course was conducted at Drakenstein Prison.
The caregivers will undergo in-service training at local hospitals and clinics, before they resume their duties in their respective communities.
Masakhane renders services to young parolees upon their release from prison. The organisation’s main focus is on HIV/Aids life skills, counselling, awareness campaigns and home-based care.
Economic development programmes are also rendered, where parolees are trained in small business management. Targeted prisons are Drakenstein, Hawequa and Brandvlei.
According to the programme manager, Nathan Ramalane, approximately 300 000 inmates are released back into the community each year, many bringing with them illness, infections and diseases.
