Drama academy sets the stage in Paarl
2006-01-19
MANY more young people in Paarl will be acting up as the Helen O’Grady Drama Academy opens its affordable community-based programme on Tuesdays at the Old Mill Theatre.
The Academy, one of the largest drama schools in South Africa, has specialist drama teachers who undergo an extensive training in the Helen O’Grady teaching methods to ensure that each student is encouraged in a warm, positive learning environment, where mutual respect is a high priority.
The award-winning programme aims to develop enthusiasm, confidence, self-esteem, communication skills and social skills, through a highly developed and extensive drama curriculum.
All students attend a one-hour lesson, each week of the school year.
In the final term all the students begin rehearsing a scripted play, devised for their particular age-group, which is performed to a public audience.
This is the highlight of the Academy’s year and reflects the talents and the skills of the students and their teachers.
The curriculum, which has been developed over 26 years internationally, is ongoing and progressive, and young people in the school can remain in the Academy from 5 to 17 years of age without ever repeating a lesson.
This highly developed original drama programme caters for three age-groups: Youth Theatre (12-17 years), Upper Primary (9-11 years), Lower Primary (5-8 years).
Duncan Rice, the principal of the Western Cape Academy, said, “It is wonderful that our drama classes are now in easy reach of everyone.”
