Mayoral visit
2006-01-19
THE Chief Executive Officer of Craigavon Borough Council in Northern Ireland, Francis Rock, recently visited the Cape Winelands Region to study issues around transformatoin and amalgamation of local government.
Northern Ireland is currently going through a similar process whereby the existing 26 councils will be reduced to seven.
The CEO considers the South African experience very relevant because both countries have experienced a long period of political violence and the ensuing processes aimed at a peaceful resolution.
Before departing for South Africa, Rock raised an amount of around R27 500 from friends and colleagues and from the Councillors and staff of Craigavon Borough Council (one of the largest in Ireland) that was donated to the Sizamile crèche in Stellenbosch.
