Sundowns take a couple of knocks

THE pride of Mbekweni soccer, Mbekweni Sundowns, have been through a trying time recently, but is nevertheless holding its own in the Western Cape Vodacom League.

Sundowns who were promoted to the Vodacom League following their success in 2004, had some difficulty late last year when the coaches, Robert Meyer and Sanku Khaile, took a break from the team.

Apart from the absentee coaches, the club also lost some of its depth after some quality players sought out greener pastures at other clubs.

It was left to Memory Pikinin and Bandile Ngesana to take over the coaching of the team.

Fortunately the team’s sponsor, Omnicars, is still supporting their efforts.

Sundowns have played two matches in the second half of the competition.

On 14 January they came up against Strandfontein in an away game and came away with a 1-1 draw. The promising striker, Lubabalo Sibhula, found the back of the net for the Paarl team.

A week later Sundowns faced the second team of Ajax Cape Town at home. The thriller of a match ended in a goalless draw.

Sundowns will play Beaufort West City at Rustdene in the Karoo town on Saturday and it promises to be a cracker of a game.

Both teams currently have 22 points on the log. Sundowns however have only played 20 matches while their counterparts have played 23.
