A NUMBER of objections have been received to the proposed development of the farm Vredenburg in Brug Street, Paarl, for residential and business purposes.

The site is located on Main Street in the historic heart of Paarl, close to the Strooidak Church.

The application for the change of land usage of the farm is currently being considered by the provincial Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning.

The owner of the land, David Bourbon-Leftley, plans to develop 52 single residential units on the agricultural land located between Main Street and the Paarl Boys’ High sportsgrounds.

The property of five hectares is reserved for urban purposes, but is to be consolidated and subdivided to make provision for smaller erven, if provincial approval is obtained.

The residential units, each with an attic storey, are planned on plots varying from 300 to 1000 square metres.

The security development, known as Vredenburg Village, will have controlled access from Main Street and Brug Street.

A business site of 0,41 hectares is planned on the western side of the property, so that none of the residential units abuts directly on Main Street.

A number of objections have been received to the development plans, based on the density, traffic flow, building height and lack of clarity on what kind of appearance and usage the business sites will have.

* Objections from the public to two other proposed developments, a three-storey block of flats behind a service station in Brug Street and a five-storey block of flats in Malherbe Street, are currently being considered by the Municipality.
