Big haul after chase on N1
2006-02-02
THE prompt action of local police officers after an anonymous tip-off, led to the arrest of three drug-traffickers and the seizure of almost a million rands worth of dagga.
The drama took place on Wednesday last week when police in Mbekweni were informed of a vehicle travelling from Durban to Cape Town with a large supply of dagga.
The Drakenstein police were asked to patrol the N1 in order to seize the vehicle.
The van was spotted just outside Paarl at 03:00 and when ordered to stop, the driver sped off in the direction of Cape Town.
A high-speed chase ensued between the police and the van, and the Durbanville police were asked to assist in apprehending the assailants.
The police were eventually able to bring the car to a halt at the turn-off to the R300.
When the back of the van was opened, police found 20 large bags of dagga with an estimated street value of R800 000.
Three men were arrested and appeared in the Kuils River Magistrate’s Court.
