Early one-day success for Paarl

Early one-day success for Paarl

2006-02-02

THE first team of Novel Paarl Cricket Club trounced Young Peoples by six wickets in their 45 over competition clash at Parys grounds on Saturday.

With this victory the home team made amends for their defeat two weeks ago in their 60 over competition clash at Dal Josaphat Stadium.

The visitors were sent in to bat on a slow and dry wicket by the home captain, Lynal Jansen.

Opening bowler Lyndon Fredericks (2/16 in 7 overs) found the target with the last ball of the first over of the day and sent Rupert Bailey packing for a duck.

In his third over Fredericks again rocked the Peoples batting line-up when he took his second wicket which saw Quinton Kannemeyer brilliantly caught by the wicketkeeper, Lee-Roy Walters (three catches), with the visitors’ score on 3/1.

The Paarl opening bowlers restricted the visitors to a run rate of two runs an over.

The visitors’ woes continued as they were restricted to 28/4 after 16 over after losing two more wickets.

Edwin Jacobs and Brendon Gabriels made a stand of sorts when they added 34 runs to the score before the fifth wicket fell in the 24th over with 60 runs on the board.

A partnership of 65 runs between Jacobs (55 4x5) and Lorenzo Jacobs (37 4x1, 6x1) for the sixth wicket gave the innings of the visitors some substance.

With seven overs remaining and the score on 128/6, things looked bleak for Young Peoples.

Paarl’s captain, Jansen, introduced himself to the bowling attack and took three wickets in 3.1 overs conceding only 11 runs.

The visitors were bowled out for a mere 153 runs in the 45th over.
Godfrey Stevens (2/18 in 9 overs) and debutant Hein Adonis (2/49 in 9 overs) were the other Paarl bowlers who had the batsmen in tatters.

The home team also had a couple of hiccups early on and by the 16th over had 45/3 on the board.

Elrick Jansen and Walters steadied the ship with a match winning fourth wicket partnership of 61 runs in 16 overs before Jansen (57 4x7) lost his wicket in the 31st over.

An unbeaten fifth wicket partnership of 53 runs by Walters (62 not out 4x7, 6x1) and Jansen (18 not out 4x2) saw Paarl reach the target in the 40th over.

Walters, who clinched the match in style with a huge six over the mid-wicket boundary and Elrick Jansen were joint winners of the man of the match for Paarl.

Lester Opperman (1/25 in 9 overs) and Henley Julies (1/12 in 7 overs) were the visitors’ best bowlers.

Novel Paarl is logged in a double header this weekend when they play against Berg River I (Weltevrede) on Saturday and then Paarl East I (Parys Grounds) on Sunday in the 45 over competition.

Paarl II (255/9) beat Young Peoples II (219/10) at Dal Josaphat with 36 runs in their 45 over clash at the weekend.

Lindsay van der Berg (28 4x3), Leroy Walters (97 4x8, 6x1), William Petersen (39 4x5) and Clint Philander (28 4x3, 6x1) were the
batsmen who helped Paarl to reach 255/9 in their 45 overs.

Jermaine Williams (4/61) and Marlin Carolissen (2/37) took wickets for Young Peoples.

Young Peoples were restricted to 219/10.

Audin Carolissen (29 4x4), Lindsay Davy (24 4x1, 6x2), H Baron (36 4x1, 6x3) and Marlin Carolissen (34 4x5x4) helped the home team to reach 219 runs.

Spin bowlers Alfredo Adams (3/43) and Wayne Minnies (4/25) took wickets for Paarl.

Paarl III (229/10) lost to Van Der Stel (335/9) by 106 runs.

Elrico Matthee (50 4x5, 6x1), Graham Adams (25 4x4) and Basil Petersen (47 4x8) made runs for Paarl with Petersen (2/37), Matthee (2/68) and Eldine Saville (2/31) taking wickets.

This weekend Paarl II takes on Berg River II and Paarl III plays Paarl East on Saturday at the Parys Grounds. On Sunday Paarl II plays against Paarl East II at New Orleans.
