Freedom Hills scoops award
2005-03-31
THE boutique wine cellar Freedom Hills, south of Paarl, scooped a gold medal and the special trophy for “Best Red Wine retailing for under R50”, for their Freedom Hills Merlot 2002 at the Cape Gourmet Festival’s prestigious 2005 Swiss International Air Lines Wine Awards.
This boutique cellar is named Freedom Hills because the cellar overlooks the Drakenstein Prison, where Nelson Mandela took his walk to freedom.
Other trophy winners were Sumaridge Sauvignon Blanc (best boutique white wine), Kaapzicht Steytler Pinotage 2002 (best red wine) and Sterhuis Chardonnay 2004 (Best Kept Secret).
Said viticulturist and wine-maker of Freedom Hills, Ryan Wyness, “the wine is a smooth, easy drinking, classic style wine, not typically New World, and has been aged for two years in French oak. It’s a good wine that is fresh and new, and is ready to drink now.”
