Franschhoek debt write-off
2006-02-02
THE Executive Mayoral Committee of Stellenbosch Municipality has, in terms of the Payment for Services Campaign, adopted strict criteria and given its approval to write-off of a certain amount of bad debt. This will also benefit residents of Franschhoek and Groot Drakenstein.
This announcement was made at a special awards ceremony in recognition of those municipal account holders who have an excellent payment record for their rates and services accounts.
The recipients of the awards were selected from 26 000 account holders specifically because of their excellent payment record in general, and specifically during the last six months.
A total amount of R6 896 551 was written off, benefiting some 1 834 account holders. These write-offs will not affect Council’s operating results or its financial position in any way because ample provision was made for bad debt in the previous financial years.
Consumers who made arrangements with the Municipality and honoured it will now benefit from their commitment by having the interest on their debts written off.
In the draw, three lucky account holders per ward who had been paying diligently in the previous six months, received back credit on their household accounts equalling the following month’s bill up to a maximum of R750 per household.
The Municipality believes that the Payment for Services campaign was well supported. To date more than R10 million has been collected and more than 1 000 payment arrangements made.
