Matches will bring hope

Matches will bring hope

2006-02-09

SOCCER and tennis matches between former political prisoners and current prison inmates of Drakenstein Prison will take place at Drakenstein Correctional Services’ soccer ground Saturday at 09:00.

The match will take place to commemorate the historic day when former President Nelson Mandela was released from prison.

It will also commemorate the political prisoners who fell in the struggle for national liberation.

“We will remember those who fought side by side to realise the release of those political prisoners,” says Jama Matakata, chairperson of the Western Cape Ex-Political Prisoners Committee.

“We would also like to bring hope to those inmates by encouraging them to look beyond prison walls. We understand their predicament and wish to say that their conduct in the interim will determine their destiny.

“We hope they draw strength and courage from us and make a positive contribution to society when released.”

The winners in Saturday’s game will be awarded a trophy and prison inmates will also receive 30 copies of Matakata’s autobiography, ‘Hills of Hope’.

“This is for us an emotional event and we hope we will be able to reflect and have fun at the same time.”
