Sundowns, Cosmos both go down
2006-02-09
TWO soccer teams of Mbekweni both had to face defeat in their matches on Saturday at the Mbekweni Stadium.
Mbekweni Cosmos were beaten 1-0 by Premier United from Cape Town in the dying minutes of their Castle promotional league match.
Mwzandile ‘Zwayi’ Zonke turned the tables on the Paarl team when he found the back of the net after convincingly beating the Cosmos goalie.
Cosmos were lying in the sixth position before this weekend’s defeat. Mbekweni Sundowns were thumped 2-0 by Brazilian Chiefs of Beaufort West in their Vodacom promotional league game at the Mbekweni Stadium on Saturday.
The visitors took the advantage early on after scoring two goals within the first 10 minutes.
Both goals came after the Chiefs attacker dazzled the local team’s right back defender leaving goalkeeper Sipho Magagula to fend for himself.
Newly signed Sundowns striker Siyanda Nkewu played an excellent game, but could unfortunately not capitalise on his chances.
The Mbekweni team started the game well, but in the second half they lacked the necessary urgency to score goals. Sundowns will have to concentrate to play the whole match with the same intensity if they hope to climb the log.
Their defeat now places Mbekweni Sundowns in the 12th position on the Vodacom League points board.
Sundowns play Old Mutual in Pinelands on Saturday at 15:00.
