Van der Walt makes history

Van der Walt makes history

2006-02-09

IN a historic first for both his club and province golfer Dawie van der Walt was named as South Africa’s number one amateur player by the South African Golf Digest Magazine.

It is the first time ever that this honour is bestowed upon a player from the Boland and/or the Paarl Golf Club.

“I can’t believe it, it’s really a big surprise, especially since I’ve been playing all my golf in America,” a flabbergasted van der Walt said after hearing the news from his father, Dawie senior.

A huge part of van der Walt’s successful CV for the accolade (he was nominated by the South African Golf Association) includes his recent success in the US where he currently plays for the Lamar University in Texas.

His highlights of last season include being the No 1 player and captaining Lamar University’s golf team, being named Freshman of the Year and receiving Ping All American Honours.

Van der Walt also lost in the quarter final match at the 105th US Amateur, won the Ping Putting Contest and took the honours at the Del Walker Intercollegiate Competition.

He also reached a seventh position at the Western Refining All America Golf Classic competing against players such as Tiger Woods and Davis Love III.

To complete his achievements van der Walt was selected for the Golf World Mid Season All American Team and received medalist honours at the Baylor Invitational.

He is currently the 36th ranked amateur by the Golf Stat and Titleist in USA.

Dawie senior will accept the award on his son’s behalf at the gala function that will take place in Midrand on Monday.
