SOUTH AFRICAN teachers’ dreams of improving the quality of maths and science education in rural and under-resourced schools could soon come true – thanks to a R200 000 grant from the Carl & Emily Fuchs Foundation.

The foundation has partnered with GreaterGood SA and is ready to start channelling grants of up to R10 000 to maths and science teachers for projects which will directly benefit learners and improve teaching and learning methods in under resourced schools.

To apply for the grants, teachers can visit Teacher's Dream at www.TeachersDream.co.za to complete the application form.

The website acts as a connector between especially rural teachers (who don’t normally have networks to whom to address their requests for help) and would-be donors.

Other ways of logging requests are by faxing applications to GreaterGood SA on 794-2239 or by email dreams @ggsa.co.za. Proposals must reach GreaterGood SA by 23 February.

The Carl & Emily Fuchs Foundation is one of the oldest and largest family foundations in South Africa and has funded educational initiatives and outreach projects for the past 35 years.

Says Riaan Els, Chief Executive Officer of the Fuchs Foundation: “Our latest flagship project - Promotion of Excellence - is aimed at developing and facilitating excellence in a variety of spheres, including the promotion of educational excellence in rural, disadvantaged or under-resourced schools”.

GreaterGood SA – who is facilitating the donations – needs teachers to submit proposals in order to access the funds.

The Foundation’s funding will allow teachers to do educational excursions, create activities or outcomes based learner materials or buy equipment for experiments but we need them to tell us what they plan to do via a formal proposal before 23 February 2006.
