Paarl Fun Ride gets underway this weekend
2006-02-16
THE annual Bouckaert-Soenen Paarl Fun Ride will again attract numerous cycling enthusiasts when it gets underway on Saturday.
As usual the event will consist of five events - three road races of 115km, 78km and 53km each, and two mountain-bike races of 42km and 20km which will take riders up and around Paarl Mountain.
The 115km long route follows the R45 out of town before turning left onto the Voorpaardeberg, then right onto Klipheuwel and left onto the R304 all the way into Stellenbosch.
Turn left out of Stellenbosch onto the R44 and then right onto the R310 and over Helshoogte before turning left onto R45 and heading back into Paarl for the finish at the old South Prison on Berg River Boulevard.
The 78km and 53km routes also follow the R45 to the four way stop outside Wellington then turn left onto the R44 towards Stellenbosch and under the N1 across the R101 and then to 53km route turns left onto the Simondium Road and joins the R45 back to Paarl.
The 78km continues to the R310 junction outside Stellenbosch where it joins the 115km route again over Helshoogte and back to Paarl.
The routes for the Animal/Paarl Motors MTB Challenge will be both enjoyable and testing.
The long route has returned to the original less technical 38km route.
This route offers one of the best 8km climbs on the fun ride circuit, as well as lots of single track and technical sections, a climb towards Paarl Rock and a fast descent to the main road.
The short routes include the same initial 8km test, scenic views of the Paarl Valley as well as the fast descent, so check your break blocks.
All the races will start and finish at the Faure Street Stadium where food and drink stalls will be available.
Persons who want to book a stall at the stadium, can contact Elsabé Koch on 073-301-2425 by tomorrow 12:00.
