Lucky to survive

A TEENAGER was lucky to survive a freak accident in which a truck smashed into the car in which she was sitting next to the Agter Paarl Road on Tuesday.
When a flat tyre forced a man from Wellington to stop next to the road, he got out of the car and made an emergency call on his cellular telephone.
His niece, Margo Claasen (18) of Pelikaan Street, remained in the vehicle. When she saw a huge truck bearing down on her she fell flat on the seat.
“That saved her life,” an rescue worker said later.
“The trailer behind the truck had started swevring and eventually smashed into the car, rooling onto its side in the middle of the road.” Emergency personnel struggled to free the girl from the wreck, which was stuck between the horse and trailer.
When towaway trucks tried to move the wreck, the lorry caught fire and the Drakenstein Fire Brigade had to rush to the scene.
* In another accident in Agter-Paarl that afternoon, two bakkies collided near the entrance to Rhebokskloof. Both drivers sustained minor injuries.
