THE team of Novel Paarl Cricket Club got back on the winning trail in a big way when they beat Malmesbury with 101 runs on Saturday.

The Paarl team first took to the crease after losing the toss. They lost opener Elrick Jansen in the third over of the day, after which Wade Anderson and Marco Walters (25 4x3) took the score to 45/2 in the 15th over.

With 85 runs on the scoreboard the home team lost two wickets in quick succession to end on 90/4 in the 32nd over.

Hilton Solomon with 36 runs, which included three big sixes and two fours, shared a partnership of 65 runs in 13 overs with Anderson for the fifth wicket before he was bowled in an attempt to hit the ball out of the park.

Kurt Martin entered the frame and shared a 72 run partnership with Anderson.

After scoring a quick 50 of just 37 balls which included five boundaries and three sixes, Martin (53) lost his wicket with the score on 227/6 in the 56th over.

Paarl ended their innings on 268/7 in their allotted 60 overs, with Anderson scoring an unbeaten 80 runs which included seven boundaries.

The best bowlers for the visitors were Heinrich Pieterse (2/27) and Jason Cicero (2/66).

Malmesbury started their innings indifferently when they lost three wickets for a mere 22 runs in the first 10 overs.

Opening bowler Lyndon Fredericks was the main destroyer with figures of 2/5 in five overs.

Alwyn Hanekom and Stefan Geldenhuys got together and didn’t bat as if they were interested in making any attempt to win the match, as they added just 13 runs to the total in the next 14 overs.

They however scored a flurry of boundaries in the next three overs to take the total to 64/3 in the 27th over.

Hanekom with 16 runs off 82 balls lost his wicket in the 32nd over with the visitors on 75/4.

The home team was restricted to 167/10 in the 58th over, with Geldenhuys ending on an unbeaten 97 (14x7, 6x2).

Anwell Newman (4/32) was the main wicket taker. He was well supported by Fredericks (2/14), Rohan Goetham (2/39) and Lynal Jansen (2/31).

This weekend Novel Paarl plays against Victorians CC at Coetzenburg in Stellenbosch.

The hopes of Paarl's second team to retain their title in the Premier Reserve Competition were dashed after losing vital games against Maties and Paarl East over the past two weekends.
