New sponsor for wine show

AFTER six years, the South Africa’s Trophy Wine Show will now be sponsored by Old Mutual. The judging takes place at the Grande Roche Hotel in Paarl from 8 to 11 May.
Fairbairn Capital, the wealth management division of Old Mutual, has sponsored the show since its inception.
While Old Mutual becomes the headline sponsor of the Show, the premier award of the show is the Fairbairn Capital Trophy for the Most Successful Winery.
The tastings which follow the announcement of the competition’s winners in June will now be taken to five major national centres and to a combined audience of more than 2000 dedicated wine enthusiasts.
Old Mutual has also substantially increased its purchase and distribution of “Icons – South Africa’s Champion Wines Reviewed,” the hardcover book which details the show’s results and profiles the country’s most successful producers.
Since 2005 the book has appeared in the country’s main bookstores and wine outlets within a week of the announcement of the show’s results. This extraordinary publishing achievement gives the text immediacy and relevance and helps consumers to make an informed choice about wines which will appear at the same time bearing the Trophy Wine Show’s logo – now amended to reflect the Old Mutual brand.
The overseas judges comprise Vanya Cullen, senior Australian show judge and CEO of Cullen’s Wines, Paul Pontallier, directeur of Chateau Margaux, Michael Schuster, renowned UK wine educator, and Richard Kelley (Master of Wine), South African wine specialist at UK-based Richards Walford Wines.
The local judges include Carrie Adams, partner at and wine buyer for Norman Goodfellows, Marc Kent, winemaker at Boekenhoutskloof, Angela Lloyd, well known taster for the Platter Guide, Cathy van Zyl, South Africa’s only resident MW, and Chris Williams, winemaker at Meerlust. Michael Fridjhon, who has been show convenor since 2002, continues as Chairman of the Judges.
The results of the competition will be announced in Cape Town on 5 June.
