No sour grapes for Sauermann
2006-03-09
IN a very tense conclusion to this year’s Paarl Golf Club Championship, George Sauermann secured victory during a sudden death play-off.
Tensions grew as JL Swart (77), a former winner, was three down to George Sauermann (80) after 72 holes on the final day.
Swart however came back to challenge and eventually forced a playoff, posting a score of 297.
Despite his steady performance throughout the competition, Sauermann began feeling the heat and with drops on the closing three holes nearly let it all slip.
With Swart forcing the play-off and with sudden death at hand the pair proceeded down the tenth.
Sauermann’s only birdie of the day gave him his first win as club champion at Paarl Golf Club.
Defending champion Freddie Steyn was unable to defend his title due to the South African Amateur being held at De Zalze Golf Estate this weekend.
The C Division played on a stableford format for the first time. The competition was hotly contested for three days with Ross Gilmore and Ambrose Higgins coming in second and third respectively on 119 points, Hans Werner Andrea showed true metal to hold off the chase and eventually ran out the winner with a resounding 141.
The competition was just as fierce in the B Division, with five players - Rodney Kitching, Piet Wessels, Ivan Kellerman and Simon Longhurst - being in contention on the final day.
The experienced Erik Troost, who has won this trophy five times before, however came through on a gross score of 331 to beat the field by four strokes.
