Paarl hosts first ever PGA event

2005-04-07

THE top golfing talent in the country will be in action when the third Parmalat Classic starts at the Paarl Golf Club today.

Following two successful events at Silver Lakes in Pretoria and De Zalze Golf Club in Stellenbosch, Parmalat - the South African dairy industry leader - continues its tradition of moving its flagship event to a new venue and the visit to Paarl from today to Monday marks a landmark trip for the 2005/2006 Sunshine Tour.

It is the first time the Paarl Golf Club plays host to a South African Professional Golf Association (PGA) event.

The local course was redesigned and added to by former SA Open champion, David Frost and construction started in 1999.

Set apart as the only 27-hole course in the Western Province, Sunshine Tour professionals will compete on the original 18 holes, which is set among trees and bordered by the Berg River and referred to as the Berg River Nine and Paarl Nine.

The competition boasts an increased purse of R300 000 this year.
The top professional golfers headlining the 54-hole event include no fewer than 11 of last season’s winners.

In the mix are Telkom PGA Championship champion, Warren Abery, three-time Vodacom Origins of Golf winner, Thomas Aiken, Omar Sandys (Vusi Ngubeni Development Strokeplay), Barry Painting (FNB Botswana Open), Patrick O’Brien, (VOG at Pezula), Steve van Vuuren (VOG at Schoeman Park), Ulrich van den Berg (Seekers Travel Pro-Am and Sun City Touring Pro-Am), Grant Muller (Royal Swazi Sun Touring Pro-Am), Mark Murless (MTC Namibian PGA Championship), Divan van den Heever (Bearingman Highveld Classic) and Andre Cruse (Wild Coast Sun Touring Pro-Am).

Nico van Rensburg, who capitalised on a superb return to form to win the season opening FNB Botswana Open two weeks ago will also feature in the line-up, as well as Desvonde Botes, winner of the inaugural event, who comes to Cape Town with a strong intention to add a second Parmalat Classic title to his impressive list of 12 Sunshine Tour wins.

The field also boasts a host of young guns, including Ross Wellington, whose third place finish in Botswana has placed him firmly in contention for his maiden Sunshine Tour victory and 21-year-old Mohammed Tayob, winner of the 2005 Vusi Ngubeni Development Strokeplay, making his second professional appearance.

Other strong contenders for the title include James Kamte, Trevor Fisher, Nico le Grange, Johan Etsebeth, Grant Veenstra, Anton Haig and former SA number one amateur, Matthew Kent.
Among the Cape Town contingent vying for the title are regulars Sammy Daniels, Alan and Mike Michell, Steve Basson, Hennie Walters, Paul Bradshaw, Jean Hugo, Ian Kennedy, Nicholas Lawrence, Ben van Rensburg, newcomer Jakobus Roos and a couple of former Sunshine Tour greats, including Noel Maart, Johan Engelbrecht and Ben Fouche, the teaching professional at Paarl Golf Club.

A Pro-Am was played yesterday in which 36 teams of professionals and amateurs contested a Fourball Alliance Stableford competition.
Spectators are welcome and entry is free.
