A cello for Nolufefo

A cello for Nolufefo

NO more broomsticks for Paarl cello player Nolufefo Snaaigo!

Nolufefo is now a student in Cape Town and had to forego her cello lessons at the Frank Pietersen Music School in Paarl.

In a heartfelt letter to her former music school, she wrote: “I’ve been practising on a broomstick. If I don’t hold or play a cello again I think I’ll die”.

Frank Pietersen took her plea to heart and last week Paarl Mall presented a cello to the schoolgirl prodigy from the proceeds of their gift-wrapping service over the Christmas period.

Born and raised in the township Mbekweni, Nolufefu won the coveted Principal’s Cup at the Frank Pietersen Music Centre and then, at the start of 2005, topped this accomplishment by earning a scholarship to the Cape Academy for Maths, Science and Technology in Constantia.

There was a personal price to pay, however. No more cello lessons and not even a cello of her own to play on.

However, now she can fulfil her academic dreams, while practising on her own cello.
