Dangerous pavement in Main Street
2006-03-16
THE proposed redevelopment of Lady Grey Street warranted a public meeting in the City Hall - and rightly so.
Do Main Street and environs not deserve the same attention? It is the street that is used by every Paarlite at some time or other.
The proposed redevelopment of the property of David Bourbon-Leftley (Vredenburg farm) near Brug Street creates manifold problems - a number of which are related to the volume of traffic flow.
Here Main Street is so narrow there is even a “No Stopping” sign.
A valid concern is the width of the pavement. Only slim pedestrians can walk abreast. The more corpulent step into the road.
When three young men approached this strip, two automatically walked one behind the other. The third used the road.
A while ago a young jogging mother, pushing a toddler in a pushcart, unwittingly forced all oncoming pedestrians to use the road.
Joggers invariably use the road. The same holds for the skateboarders.
How long must this situation last before somebody is seriously injured?
Pedestrians seem resigned to the situation - they appear to accept it. What to do?

The municipal spokesperson responds: An application regarding the development is currently being processed by this department. The proposal has been advertised in the press for comments and is far from being finalised.
The narrow sidewalk will definitely be addressed by our Civic Services Department. Normally a sidewalk of at least 2,5 metres will be required for any type of development.
