Old hotel to become block of apartments
2006-03-16
THE building which once housed the Picardie Hotel in Paarl’s Main Street is to be subdivided into upmarket apartments.
The building at the corner of Zion and Main Street, including Piccadilly’s Club, has been purchased by Rock Properties and is to be upgraded and redeveloped into 34 sectional title units. It will be known as La Roche and will have secure entry and secure parking for each unit.
The units will vary from one bedroom units (27 square metres) to three bedroom duplex units (80 square metres).
Commercial units are planned on the ground floor in the second phase and will include a coffee shop and laundromat.
Die Art Deco style of the exterior will be retained, but the interior will be upgraded and subdivided.
The main entrance will be at the rear from the parking area, which will offer garages, shaded parking and open parking. There is also a lift.
The current restaurant Piccadilly’s has been closed, and the last tenants will leave at the end of the month.
Construction of the first phase starts in April, with the first transfers planned for October.
The project manager and engineer is Johan Louw of CDC, while the architect is Arnold Dreyer of Worcester.
At the time of closure about fifteen years ago, the Picardie Hotel was the oldest hotel still operating in Paarl.
It was named the Royal Hotel in the 1860’s, after a visit by the youngest son of Queen Victoria.
It was also the first building in Paarl to boast a lift - which is probably why famous Hollywood film star Tyrone Power opted to enjoy lunch there in the 1950’s.
A launch event for interested purchasers is to be held at Zomerlust guesthouse on 23 March from 18:00 to 21:00 (all welcome).
