Paarl too strong for Berg River
2006-03-23
ALTHOUGH the runs didn’t come as easily as they would have wanted, the first team of Paarl Cricket Club nevertheless managed a 33 run victory over Berg River Cricket Club on Saturday.
Novel Paarl captain, Lynal Jansen, won the toss and decided to bat first on the Weltevrede sportsgrounds.
The visitors struggled early on as the Berg River bowlers got some movement off the pitch.
Novel Paarl lost its first wicket in the eighth over with the score on 26. Bobby Nicholson then scored 42 (4x4, 6x1) runs off 62 balls, losing his wicket with the score on 58/2.
Wade Anderson (30 4x3) and Godfrey Stevens added 48 runs for the third wicket before Anderson was stumped.
Paarl reached 202/8 in their allotted 60 overs. Lee-Roy Walters added a quick 22 off 20 balls which included two boundaries and a six. Stevens batted well and finished on an unbeaten 70, sending seven balls to the boundary rope.
Marquin Julies (2/51 in 15 overs) and Morné de Vries (2/39 in 10 overs) were Berg River’s best bowlers.
The home team’s batsmen also struggled to get to grips with the batting conditions.
In the first 30 overs Berg River could only manage to score 92 runs whilst losing five of their wickets.
The main destroyers for the visitors at that stage were Lyndon Fredericks and spinner Rohan Goetham.
Only D Isaacs (24 4x2) and F Arendse (20 4x3) showed some resistance early on.
Spin bowler, Stevens (5/35 in 10,3 overs), ripped through the middle order and tail-enders, sending the last batsman packing in the 53rd over for only 169 runs.
Lester Hendricks (47 not out 4x3, 6x3) was the only Berg River batsman that impressed with the bat.
Fredericks ended with bowling figures of 3/30 in nine overs while Goetham finished his bowling stint with 2/41 in 15 overs.
Stevens was Paarl’s man of the match.
