Use of dam discussed

Use of dam discussed

2006-03-23

PUBLIC meetings to discuss economic opportunities which are to form part of the Berg River Dam project will be held on Saturday.

The first meeting is at 09:00 at La Motte community hall (open day for Franschhoek Valley) and the second is at 13:00 at Pniel Millennium Hall (open day for the Dwars River Valley).

Economic opportunities which are to form part of the sustainable utilisation plan of the Berg River Dam will be discussed.

Opportunities which may be pursued by private operators after completion of the dam include aquaculture, forestry, fishing, sports and recreation, accommodation and food service as well as enviro-tourism.

These opportunities will be handled on a concession basis, as private-public partnerships.

Only small portions of the area around the dam will, however, be appropriate for development, due to the steep nature of the terrain and fluctuations in water level. Activities may not affect the quality of the water.

The Sustainable Utilisation Plan area includes the dam, portions of the La Motte state forest, sections of Robertsvlei, the land north of the dam up to the R45 and a segment of land to the east of Wemmershoek School.

A committee will be established to manage the long-term use of the area following community consultation.
