Wrong prices at store cause concern
2006-03-23
ON Tuesday 2 February I purchased groceries at Pick ’n Pay Paarl. One item was clearly placed in a rack where the price was R31,99, but when I reached the scanner at the till, the price showed as R44,99.
When I complained, the cashier referred me to a member of staff. It turned out that the item I had purchased had indeed been put in the wrong shelf.
Instead of apologising on behalf of the packers, she started lecturing me about “bar codes” and that it was my duty as a customer to determine the correct price by checking that the bar code on the label was the same as the one on the shelf.
Although I was refunded, I feel that Pick ’n Pay has let me down by the way I was treated.
The slogan “whatever you want” really only applies to the staff and definitely not to customers.
