Water project discussed
2006-04-06
A NEW water treatment plant and reservoir for the Berg Water Project is to be built in the Muldersvlei/Joostenberg area by the City of Cape Town.
As part of the environmental impact study, a workshop and open house to discuss the proposal will be held at Klapmuts Primary from 16:30 on Wednesday.
A workshop of one hour will be followed by a presentation of issues at 17:00 and an open house from 18:00.
The three possible sites have been selected for their elevation, which will ensure enough water pressure for delivery to Cape Town and Drakenstein, and linkage to the existing Wemmershoek pipeline.
The possible routes for the pipeline from the dam to the plant are part of the study.
Technical and environmental considerations as well as input from the public will indicate the preferred site.
The sloping site required will be approximately 120 000 square metres in size (water treatment plant) and 90 000 square metres (300 Ml reservoir) and will be purchased from the landowner(s).
The pipeline from the new dam to be built in the upper Berg River, will run west of the Paarl/Simondium road, passing under the N1 near Klapmuts.
The project is scheduled for completion by 2010.
