Paarlite axed by DA

THE Stellenbosch municipal manager, Bruce Kannemeyer of Paarl, has been axed by the Stellenbosch municipal council, which is now under the control of the DA alliance.
A press conference was held on Tuesday, at which mayor Lauretta Maree said it had become clear that a mutual lack of trust had made co-operation difficult between her and Kanneyer after the DA and its associates took political control of the municipal council.
“At a special meeting of the Executive Mayoral Committee it was decided to engage the services of a consultant with a view to reach a settlement agreement between the Municipal Manager and the Council to terminate his position as Municipal Manager.
The Mayor emphasised that the impending court case against Kannemeyer in the so-called “Travelgate” matter had no influence on her decision.
The two parties agreed to terminate Kannemeyer's employment contract and that in settlement of this dispute, he would accept a lesser amount than he might be entitled to.
“The termination agreement is not related to the employee’s work performance, conduct or integrity.”
Kannemeyer, previously an ANC parliamentarian, is due to appear in the Cape High Court in July on allegations of travel coupon fraud.
Earlier this year it was reported that Kannemeyer slapped a ban on a Stellenbosch travel company when it apparently declined to donate an air ticket for a Women’s Day celebration.
The ticket was to have been for performer Clint Brink, the son of Kannemeyer’s personal assistant, Chrissie Brink (also a Paarl resident).
She then, on Kannemeyer’s instruction, e-mailed more than 100 councillors and municipal employees stating that all future flight reservations should be made through a different travel company. At the time Kannemeyer denied any wrongoing, saying the municipality had the right to decide with whom to do business.
Brink has since been elected to the District Council and has resigned her post at the Stellenbosch Municipality.
