CBD plans forge ahead

THE redevelopment of the Paarl Central Business District is a step closer to reality.
This week, the Drakenstein Municipality is advertising a series of changes in land use, rezonings and road closures in connection with the redevelopment of the CBD.
The application is for the change of land use in terms of the Environmental Conservation Act, change of the site character in terms of the National Heritage Resources Act, rezoning, closure of streets, closure of a public open space and lease of abovementioned streets and open space.
A total of 57 erven are involved, as well as sections of Lady Grey Street, New Street and Fabriek Street and other streets, parts of which are to be closed for vehicles, to allow for pedestrian use.
Also affected are Van der Lingen Square, Wamakers Square (behind Pick ’n Pay), Patriot Street and Van der Poels Square, as well as the parking area abutting the Toringkerk church hall.
Van der Lingen Square and other municipal properties within the redevelopment area will be leased to a public company (Anytime Investments No 14) for redevelopment.
The application can be viewed at the office of the Acting Head of Planning and Economic Development in the Paarl civic centre (tel 807-4834). Motivated objections must be lodged by 22 May.
