Gorgeous fashions

THE finale to a gorgeous day in the country in aid of charity was the announcement of Ella Buter from Johannesburg as the winner of the 2006 Nederburg Auction Rare South African Fashion Finds on Sunday.
Buter takes home a R50 000 cash prize from Nederburg to participate in the Nokia Cape Town Fashion Week later this year, when she will present her superella label in a solo show, bringing her to the attention of the mainstream fashion world and taking her to the next level in her career.
The handing over of her prize capped a day-long extravaganza at the famous Paarl winery that included exceptional wines, a gourmet braai, live music and a fashion show on a mirrored runway featuring top designers such as Gert van de Merwe, Jenni Button, Lunar, Amanda Laird Cherry, Sun Goddess, Black Coffee and Marion & Lindie, as well as leading international model Oluchi.
This year’s Nederburg Auction raised R322 000 for the Nederburg Charity Trust.
A total of 50 cases of 2005 Nederburg Amateur White a wine made from Nederburg Chardonnay, Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc and blended by Vincent Modet, a French sommelier working in the Cape, and Tania Kleintjies, a winemaking graduate from the University of Stellenbosch, raised R79 600.
Other high-ticket items were a 12-litre Balthazar bottle of Rust en Vrede red wine that raised R32 000 and R19 000 for a bottle of Solera from Madeira, made in 1792, a year after the Nederburg farm was established.
Some of the memorabilia auctioned at Sunday’s gala charity staging of the auction open to the public included a Monty Python T-shirt, autographed by Eric Idle, an Osbourne Family T-shirt signed by Ozzy and a shirt designed and signed by Whoopi Goldberg.
Other items to go under the hammer of auctioneer Stephan Welz were a pair of drumsticks signed by Alex Van Halen; a soccer jersey signed by football great Pelé; and a boxing glove autographed by boxing impresario Don King.
Nederburg Charity Trust’s beneficiaries are the Hospice Palliative Care Association of South Africa, Organ Donor Foundation and an Aids-HIV-support NGO called Mothers2Mothers.
