Boland women go down to WP in cricket final
2006-04-12
THE loss of their captain and a somewhat mediocre performance with the bat saw the Boland women’s cricket team lose to Western Province in the final of the Women’s Cricket Provincial League.
The Boland team went into the match as favourites as WP has not been able to beat this team in the last three years.
Boland captain Sunette Loubser won the toss and had no hesitation in batting first on the Brackenfell pitch.
After losing their first wicket with only five runs on the board, the Bolanders never got their innings back on track even with a gutsy 56 by veteran Audrey Petersen.
Boland got bowled out with the last ball of their allotted 50 overs for a mediocre score of 145.
Shandré Fritz was the pick of the Western Province bowlers ending with figures of 4/29 in 10 overs.
The WP run chase got off to a dismal start when their top three batsmen lost their wickets after playing silly shots which left them reeling on 17/3 in the sixth over.
Fritz with an unbeaten 80 played a match winning innings however and ably supported by Alexis le Breton (22) in a 76 run partnership, got the WP innings back on track.
Boland never gave up and fought until the 45th over before the winning runs were scored with WP only having lost six wickets.
Boland definitely missed their captain, Loubser, who had to be taken to hospital after landing awkwardly on her shoulder while diving to stop a boundary.
She has been one of the key bowlers this season making her presence felt on the field.
