Avenant finally plays for Boland
2006-04-12
THE newly elected full back of the Boland Cavaliers will desperately want to believe in luck the third time around.
Corrie Avenant will wear the number 15 jersey for the Boland in their match against the Free State Cheetahs in Wellington this afternoon.
Avenant will no doubt let out a sigh of relief when he at last takes the field at the Boland Stadium after being tormented by injuries during the last year.
Avenant played both full-back and fly-half for the Leopards and Griquas before joining the Boland ahead of the 2005 season.
A serious shoulder injury in a club match for Citrusdal Rugby Club put Avenant in surgery and sidelined him for the entire season.
This year saw the 25-year-old shaping well in a couple of friendly club matches.
Fate again dealt him a somewhat low blow, when a weight fell on his big toe during a gym session with the Cavaliers.
With Corrie’s biggest “little piggy” broken and not being able to go to the market much less the rugby field, playing for the Cavaliers was again postponed.
But this afternoon he finally gets his chance to show his footwork and kicking skills against the rampaging Cheetahs.
Avenant replaces Justin Peach who has been struggling with a hamstring injury for the last three weeks.
Other changes to the back line include Alvin Hugo who replaces Rico Swartz (buttock injury) on the right wing and Charl Blom who is in the starting line-up ahead of replacement Neil Papier.
Henley du Plessis takes his place in the right flanker position replacing Evert Kleinhaus who suffered concussion.
Lock Piet Myburgh who has been in action in almost all the Boland games gets a breather on the bench with Coenie Basson getting a run.
Saturday saw the Cavaliers going down 18-27 to the Lions in Wellington.
The home team were outplayed in the rucks, with the visitors also managing to successfully slow down the Cavaliers’ possession.
Quicker recycling of the ball at the breakdown points got special attention during the practice sessions this week, as it is expected that the Free State team will adopt the same strategy.
The match starts at 16:30 at Boland Stadium.
Four curtain raisers featuring eight elite regional u.13 teams will also be played and will start at 14:00.
