Farmers to meet on firefighting
2006-04-20
A MEETING to establish a Fire Protection Association (FPA) for Drakenstein’s rural areas will be held at Gymnasium High School in Paarl on 3 May at 19:00.
The high number of brush fires has prompted the establishment of such a volunteer association.
Farmers and landowners will be granted powers and responsibilities towards the prevention and fighting of bush, veld and forest fires within their areas.
According to Danny Joubert of Fire and Disaster Dynamics, such an association “can only be successful if it obtains the active support of all the relevant landowners.”
Roleplayers will include farmers, Eskom, Telkom, Spoornet, municipalities, state and provincial representatives, National Roads Agency, Correctional Services and Cape Nature.
At the inaugural meeting, at Gymnasium High’s Sport Club, an executive committee will be selected and the functions and benefits of the FPA outlined.
