Three die in fires

THREE people, including a one-year-old baby, died, and one man was seriously injured in various fires that hit Mbekweni during the past weekend.
On Saturday morning, an unknown man burnt to death in his shack in Mpumulelo Street, OR.
That same morning, a fire broke out in Dromme- daris Street, burning four shacks to the ground.
A witness to the blaze, Nelson Didiza, said that he had almost lost his own home in the fire.
“The fire started at about 08:00 and I was trying to help put out the flames before the fire could set my home alight.
“I knew there was a woman and child in the one house and I tried to kick the door down, but the flames were too strong for me to try and go into the house,” said Nelson. Thandokazi Mzwakale (25) en Zandi Mzwakale (1) burnt to death in their beds.
On Sunday evening, Daniel Ndeleli of C-block was injured when his shack burnt down. He was rushed to Paarl Hospital by the emergency services.
A spokesperson of the fire department said that this past weekend was the first cold and wet weekend of the year, and therefore people made more fires to keep warm and dry.
He warned that the public must never leave fires unattended.
