2006-04-26
THE popular Coca-Cola Football Stars where South African school’s soccer meets reality television, recently featured the Desmond Tutu Secondary School.
The soccer team of this Mbekweni school was one of three schools who competed for a spot in the national finals.
In the first match Desmond Tutu was beaten 1-0 by Sinethemba High School.
The Paarl team however struck back in their second match beating Indwe High School 1-0.
After also beating Indwe 1-0, Sinothemba High again met Desmond Tutu in the final.
A goal by Bulelani Manjaji saw Sinothemba beating the Paarl boys 1-0 and thus qualifying for the finals.
Bafana Bafana soccer star Mark Fish was the Football Stars scout who kept an eye out for talented players and identified Desmond Tutu’s Oscar Pondane (goal keeper) and Anthony Masiza (striker) as possible inclusions in the workshop later this month.
At the workshop some 50 boys will be put through their paces and after dramatic eliminations, will be cut down to the final 15.
These 15 players will have the opportunity to travel overseas and play against international development teams.
After returning from abroad the players will be snapped up by the local Premier Soccer League clubs for their junior development teams.
