SAA Pro-Am Invitational debuts in Paarl
2006-04-26
THE Paarl Golf Club at the Boschenmeer Estate will play host to the inaugural SAA Pro-Am Invitational this week.
South African Airways, the official sponsor of South Africa’s flagship event, the SAA Open Championship, will sponsor the SAA Pro-Am Invitational in Paarl as well as a second invitational in Kempton Park.
Both events boast a purse of R350 000 each with the second SAA Pro-Am Invitational taking place from 18 to 20 May.
Sunshine Tour commissioner Johan Immelman welcomed the Tour’s newest tournaments and said that this new sponsorship not only underwrites the seriousness of South African Airways’ involvement in local golf, it further accelerates the growth of the Winter Swing on the Sunshine Tour circuit.
“The new events also provide SAA with a wonderful opportunity to host amateur guests in the Pro-Ams preceding both events, where our Sunshine Tour professionals can give back to golf by instructing, advising and entertaining the SAA guests,” said Immelman.
Established in 1908, Paarl Golf Club ranks among the oldest golf clubs in the Western Cape.
It boasts a brand new clubhouse, built in the same Cape style of the Boschenmeer estate, and offers majestic views of the surrounding mountains and the first David Frost signature course.
Paarl Golf contracted former SA Open champion, David Frost to redesign and expand the course in 1999 and reached completion in 2004.
Set apart as the only 27-hole course in the Western Province, Sunshine Tour professionals will compete on the original 18 holes, which is set among trees and bordered by the Berg River and referred to as the Berg River Nine and Paarl Nine.
Today’s Pro-Am precedes the main tournament, which tees off tomorrow.
Spectators are invited to come and see South Africa’s professional golfers in action at Paarl Golf Club. Entrance is free and there is ample parking space available.
